Book Reports

August 24, 2005

    Dear Parents,

Every month, your child will be assigned a monthly book report to complete. The book report will be assigned at the beginning of the month and will always be due at the end of the month. The first book report has not been assigned yet, however, please make sure your child is reading on a nightly basis. Developing the habit of reading daily throughout the year will significantly improve reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary awareness. Additionally, I would recommend a reading journal at home. Upon reading, instruct your child to write about what they have read. Writing prompts may include:

*What was your favorite part? Why?

                                                                       * If you were the author, how might you have changed the ending?

                                                                       * How are you alike and similar to the main character?

                                                                       * Describe the problem in the story and explain how that problem was solved.

                                                                       * Explain a time when you had a similar experience to the main character's.

The reading journal will extend your child's understanding in addition to strengthening writing skills. Recalling major and minor details, identifying major characters, making personal connections, and making inferences are just a few reading strategies that are essential in developing strong readers. All of those reading strategies will be practiced throughout the year, both in the classroom as well as through the book reports.

Once again, thank you for visiting our classroom website. If you have any questions about the upcoming book reports, please feel free to call or email me.

Sincerely,
Ms. Vukmir
