GOAL: Improvement of students’ skills in Language Arts: Written Communication

QUALITY CHARACTERISTIC: Students will demonstrate compositional writing skills in three formats of written communication: *Expository, Narrative, and Persuasive essays. (*Expository is area of emphasis)

Measure One: Students in grades K – 1 will demonstrate their development of written communication skills as they apply the state standards of compositional writing assessment.

Process One: Every three weeks*, the children will assess their written communication skills by completing a response to a story prompt. The students throughout the school will use the same Expository prompt. Using the state scoring rubric, student and teacher will determine the student level of skills in written communication by comparing their work with the standards set for their grade level. During September through November, Kindergarten will do this as a whole-class experience chart. Beginning in December, Kindergarten will conduct individual student assessments.

Teachers will score the student essays and provide feedback to the students relating to the progress the students are making towards Exceeding, Meeting, or Does Not Meet state standards. Five from each classroom will be monitored (1 @ high, 2 @ average, 2 @ low) to measure school progress. The grade level will add results, expressed as a percent, on charts.
