CCSD 180 to end fiscal year 2007 with positive fund balances

Despite special education costs that exceeded budget projections by over $100,000, the Education Fund at CCSD 180 will end fiscal year 2007 in the black. At the Board of Education’s June 26, 2007 meeting, Superintendent Frank Rink reported that an increase in federal impact aid revenues and some conservation of education fund expenditures will result in an Education Fund Cash balance of well over $2 million for 2006-07. Retiring on June 30, Rink indicated that he will leave the school district with an Education Fund that has a higher fund balance than when he arrived in 2001 and the highest overall cash balance in all funds since the construction of a kindergarten wing and kitchen/cafeteria addition in 2002. However, he said that he took greatest pride in the fact that student programs and academic achievement are placed higher on the district's list of priorities, and that the Board and staff have always placed the benefit of students as central to the existence of our schools.

In other action, the Burr Ridge CCSD #180 Board . . .

. . . approved implementation of the Menta Program for the 2007-08 school year. The Menta Program will integrate with the school district’s CHARACTER COUNTS! And PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Strategies) Program to further address the behavioral and academic needs of students.

. . . reviewed preliminary ISAT results in relation to annual yearly progress benchmarks as established by the No Child Left Behind Act.

. . . accepted the resignation of Board of Education members Anne Tuchek and Renee Paladino with thanks to Mrs. Tuchek and Mrs. Paladino for their dedicated service to the Board and to the children of CCSD 180.

. . . appointed Mrs. Helen Bell and Dr. Jeanette Paintsil to Board of Education positions.

. . . elected Mrs. Jenifer Mihalkanin as Secretary of the Board of Education.

. . . heard a report by SASED Director Dr. Michael Volpe and SASED Staff regarding services offered by the School Association for Special Education in DuPage County.

. . . heard a presentation by representatives of Teacher Aides regarding requests for some Board funding for health insurance in 2007-08.

. . . established Board of Education meeting dates for Fiscal Year 2008. The Board will meet at 7:00 p.m. on the third Monday of most months.

. . . adopted the 2007-08 Prevailing Wage Rate for DuPage County.

. . . determined that that executive session minutes from January 2007 through May 2007 be deemed no longer confidential and, subsequently, be made available for public inspection.

. . . awarded the 2007-08 milk bid to Lockwood Dairy.

. . . awarded the 2007-08 bread bid to Alpha Baking.

. . . heard a report regarding 2006-07 progress of the READ 180 Program and related student achievement. The Board directed the Principals to provide more information regarding grade equivalency scores at a future meeting.

. . . tabled its designation of CCSD 180 representatives on the SASED Board of Control until after consulting with incoming Superintendent Dr. Thomas Schneider.

. . . passed a resolution of congratulations for AMJES staff and students for being named Outstanding DuPage County PBIS Elementary School.

. . . made its second reading and adopted a revision to Policy 6:235/Access to Electronic Networks.

. . . presented the Board’ Award of Excellence to Miss Emily Bell, Corporal Wayne Howlett, and Dr. Frank Rink.

. . . discussed dates on which to hold a July 2007 Board of Education meeting.

. . . accepted the resignation of Teachers Ms. Sarah McJoynt and Mrs. Erinn Lutkus.

. . . offered employment for 2007-08 to Mr. Michael James (Alternative School Administrator), Ms. Danelle Jordan (BRMS Language Arts/Reading), Ms. Kimberly Leister (BRMS Vocal Music), Ms. Bernice Szumski (BRMS Language Arts/Reading), Ms. Jill Jensen (BRMS Language Arts/Reading), Mrs. Jeanette Clark (Special Education), and Ms. Beth Reynolds (Social Worker).

. . . approved assignment/employment of the following to the CCSD 180 Alternative School: Michael James (Administrator/Behavior Specialist), Rene Pacyna (Social Worker), Danielle Jarrett and Jeanette Clark (Teachers), Jan Schlemmer (Nurse), Kelly Krohn (Secretary).

. . . heard reports from the administration including the following reports from superintendent Rink:

The Superintendent thanked the Board for giving him the opportunity to work with and for the CCSD 180 community. The Board’s next meeting will be held in July 2007 in the Board Room of Burr Ridge CCSD #180 at an exact date to be determined.
