21st Century Community Learning Centers Program
by Rick France
Our District is a 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant Applicant
The 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program was established by Congress to award grants to schools and communities, to develop programs that benefit the educational, health, social services, cultural and recreational needs of the community. School-based learning centers can provide safe, drug-free, supervised and cost effective after school havens for children, youth, and their families.
To create learning centers where children, youth and families will strengthen their academic skills, learn strategies for preventing drug use and violence, and participate in activities that will enhance the regular academic program.
Objectives
- To increase the percentage of targeted students in each subgroup passing state assessments
- To provide educational enrichment programs for students
After-school learning centers that provide:
- Academic programs
- Homework help
- Drug and violence prevention sessions
- Recreational activities
- Academic Enrichment activities
If the district should be awarded this grant, our continuing After School Programs with the Community House would expand and grow to serve even more students in a greater variety of educational opportunities. The district will be informed sometime this school year if we have been awarded this grant.
