Burr Ridge CCSD 180 Announces 
Retirement of Superintendent and Burr Ridge Middle School Principal
Effective July 1, 2023

At their meeting last night, the Burr Ridge CCSD 180 Board of Education accepted. retirement letters from Superintendent Tom Schneider and Burr Ridge Middle School Principal Julie Bartell, effective at the end of next school year, July 1, 2023. 

Principal Bartell will retire after 15 years as Burr Ridge Middle School’s principal. Prior to becoming principal, Ms. Bartell served as the school’s Student Support Center administrator for eight years and as the school’s music teacher prior to that. Ms. Bartell was recognized as DuPage County’s Principal of the Year in 2019.

Under Ms. Bartell’s guidance the school has gained a well-earned reputation of putting student relationships first. Ms. Bartell’s commitment to student welfare is found in both her excellent communication with students and families and in the flourishing after school and co-curricular opportunities students and families enjoy.

In her retirement letter to the Board Ms. Bartell commented that, “the School Board’s support of public education, willingness to trust educators and administration has been crucial in working towards making this district a great place to be at for students, staff and our community.”

Ms. Bartell’s superintendent during her principalship, Tom Schneider said of Ms. Bartell, “There has never been a principal more suited to lead our school than Julie Bartell. Our students need to know that their school and principal cares about them and Julie’s heartfelt care for every one of her students always evident. She knows every student as if they were her own and is selflessly there for them and for their families.”

Superintendent Schneider’s retirement request was also accepted at the meeting and is also effective July 1, 2023.

In his retirement letter, Dr. Schneider thanked students, parents and staff for working to, “improve the lives of our students and families by expanding our school day, adding after school academic supports, expanding co-curricular activities, making the connection between great teaching, curriculum and assessment, providing technology to every child and, developing partnerships which have allowed us to address the medical and food insecurity needs of our families.”

Schneider will have served the district for sixteen years. During that time he has also served as president of the Federal Lands Impacted Schools Association and is now that organization’s Executive Director. For ten of those years, Dr. Schneider was a member of the National Association of Impacted Schools Association Board of Directors and currently is the president of the NAFIS Board of Directors for that organization.

The Board announced that former Cass School District Superintendent, Kerry Foderaro was selected to lead the search for the next superintendent and that the new superintendent, when hired, would select the next BRMS principal. More information on this process is to come.

The Board thanked Ms. Bartell and Dr. Schneider for their service to the district.
